# Convert files with Convert To It

[Convert To It](https://converttoit.com/) converts files inside the user's browser with WebAssembly builds of tools such as FFmpeg and ImageMagick. It is free, needs no account, and the file never leaves the user's device.

There is no conversion API. You can't send a file anywhere to have it converted; the conversion happens on the page, in the user's browser.

## 1. Check the formats

Ask the free metadata API (no key, 60 requests per minute per IP):

```sh
curl -s "https://converttoit.com/api/v1/formats?q=heic&from=true"   # can HEIC be read?
curl -s "https://converttoit.com/api/v1/formats?q=jpg&to=true"      # can JPG be written?
```

`from: true` means the format can be read, `to: true` that it can be written. When the input can be read and the output written, the site usually finds a route, chaining converters through an intermediate format if no single one does it. The page confirms the route once the file is chosen.

## 2. Send the user to the conversion

Give the user a link with the formats filled in, using file extensions:

```
https://converttoit.com/?from=heic&to=jpg
```

The page opens with the output format chosen. The user chooses (or drops, or pastes) the file, presses Convert and downloads the result. Up to 256 MB per file and 100 files at once, 512 MB in total. Long videos take a while, since everything runs on the user's device.

## 3. If you are acting inside the user's browser

On converttoit.com, browsers that support WebMCP expose these tools:

- `search_formats`: find formats by extension or name, and whether each can be read or written
- `list_conversion_targets`: every format a given input format can be converted to, most direct route first
- `prepare_conversion`: choose the output (and optionally input) format, so the next matching file the user picks converts straight away

## If you can connect to MCP servers

Add `https://converttoit.com/mcp` (Streamable HTTP, no key). `check_conversion` answers steps 1 and 2 in one call: whether the conversion works, in how many steps, and the link to give the user. `list_conversion_targets` and `search_formats` cover the rest.

## Don't

- Don't ask the user to upload the file to you or to a server to convert it: Convert To It doesn't need that, and it's the point of the site.
- Don't promise a conversion the API says can't be read or written.
